Basically, dart games are played between two players or two teams. The teams can be made up of two or more people each. Variations that allow for more than two sides have been devised, but these have not achieved any popularity.
Nine throws are generally allowed for each person as a warm-up before a game begins. Then, to determine which team or person is to take his turn first one dart is thrown by a person from each team. The team with the dart closest to the bull's eye takes the first turn.
Each player throws three darts in his turn. Then the darts are retrieved. If a foot crosses over the line or a person happens to trip over the oche and releases his dart, the throw counts for no points and may not be re-thrown.
Darts must stay on the board for at least five seconds after a player's final throw to count. A throw does not score if it sticks into another dart or if it falls off the board.
Darts making it on the board score in the following manner:
In the wedge: the amount posted on the outer ring. The double ring (the outer, narrow ring): twice the number hit. The triple ring (the inner, narrow ring): three times the number hit. Bulls eye (outer bull): twenty-five points. Double bulls eye (inner bull): fifty points.

Modern day bristle dartboards were first produced by Nodor in 1932, replacing the plasticine dartboards which had a strong chemical odour. When Nodor invented the new bristle dartboard it did not smell. Modern dartboards are made of sisal fibers; low quality boards are sometimes made of coiled paper. However, there are several types of sisal fibre that are used in dartboards today, originating from East Africa, Brazil and China.
A regulation dartboard is 47.08 cm (17¾") in diameter and is divided into 20 sections. Each section is separated with metal wire or a thin band of sheet metal. The best bargain dartboards have the thinnest wire separating sections so that the darts have less chance of hitting these wires and bouncing out. The numbers indicating the various scoring sections of the board are normally made of wire, especially on tournament-quality boards, but may be printed directly on the board instead.

Bargain Dartboards

Of course, if you're passionate about playing darts at your local pub, then you should seriously consider buying a dartboard to have at home as well. However, you will of course want to get a dartboard which is of high quality, but at a bargain, so that you can at least know it will last for many years.
Look for a dartboard that is well made, they are usually made out of a fiberboard today. This type of dartboard is constructed from compressed rope fibers. Then a steel band is applied to hold the board together. Along with a sheet of steel being applied to the backboard.
After this the dartboard is sanded and painted. Make sure the board you are looking at is painted well so that it is durable. You want the board to stand up to the darts being thrown at it.
Of course, the board needs to be divided into the various scoring sections, moving from the bull's eye in the center which accounts for fifty points, to the outer section which is worth zero points. The "bull's eye" section in the center is of course divided into two sections. While the inner red dot is worth 50 points, the green outer section is worth 25. The additional scoring sections seen on dart boards will be thoroughly explained in the instructions which are included with all boards.
Over and above the dartboard itself, you'll also need a chalkboard for score keeping purposes. However, even though some score keeping system is essential, you may of course opt for something other than a chalkboard. Also, don't forget to determine whether or not the dartboard includes a free set of dart.
Once you're satisfied that you've found a dartboard you're happy with, you'll have to hang it. Ideally, you should choose an area which is at least five feet wide and about eleven feet long. Furthermore, the playing area should not pass through an area of the home where people may have to walk as this will not only end up causing interruptions, but it can also be very dangerous for others.
Install a backboard behind the dartboard to protect your wall. This will insure that a missed shot doesn't hit the wall and scar it.
Also not to be overlooked is the fact that you need a non-slip area where you throw the darts from. In fact, you may want to consider purchasing one of the dedicated mats which are nowadays available because apart from providing you with secure footing, they also help to protect your floors and/or darts.
When you hang the board, you need to ensure that the red bull's eye is 5 feet and 8 inches above the floor. Unless you're using a dedicated darts mat, you'll also have to measure off the throwing distance from the board. This would see the throwing line at 7 feet and 9.25 inches.
Okay, now that you have useful information regarding dart boards, you're only left with having to go out and buy one at a bargain price before the fun can begin.
